New Black Zinc Passivate Offers Enhanced Color and Cost Control

Brunswick, Ohio – Columbia Chemical recently released COLDIP Midnight 1500 its newest black trivalent passivate for zinc plating. The passivate works well over acid chloride zinc (both ammoniated and non-ammoniated systems), cyanide zinc, alkaline cyanide-free zinc and zinc-iron/cobalt alloy deposits.

COLDIP MIDNIGHT 1500 is an easy-to-use trivalent black process with a simple three-part system which allows for maximum color control and provides a consistent black appearance.

The company released the new black passivate earlier in the year to an initial round of plating facilities where it was met with great success. Many of the facilities used the passivate from the brand-new makeup stage while others introduced it in as a slide conversion. Columbia’s technical field team reported comments from customers ranging from “it’s more consistent and considerably darker”, “the bath is rugged and maintains its integrity resulting in a nice, dark part”, to “incredible salt spray results, even without a sealer” and “the simple three-part system worked so well.” As word of its success spread, demand for installations increased.

This new, easy-to-control, cost-effective black passivate is a strong addition to Columbia Chemical’s existing line of trivalent chromium based passivates, which are hexavalent chromium free and comply with current ELV, RoHS and REACH regulations. These products offer a trivalent passivation layer that is clear, blue, yellow, black or iridescent.
